1964 : UPPI was established as a degree granting unit of UP Manila to offer MA in Demography degree with an initial grant from the Ford Foundation

1967 : Signing of the 1967 Population Declaration by 30 heads of states including President Ferdinand Marcos which underscored the conviction “that the population problem must be recognized as a principal element in long-range

1965 : First Conference on Population

1968 : The First National Demographic Survey (NDS) was conducted as a joint effort of UPPI and the Bureau of Census and Statistics (BCS).

1970 : The UPPI head (Dean) became an ex-officio member of the Board of Commissioners of the Commission on Population (POPCOM).

1973 : The Second National Demographic Survey was conducted again as a joint effort by UPPI and BCS.

1975 : The Population Resources, Environment and the Philippine Future (PREPF) Project was undertaken to identify the policy actions needed to obtain a better quality of life for the Filipinos by the year 2000.

1977 : Collaborated in the preparations for the Republic of the Philippines Fertility Survey portion of the World Fertility Survey. Contnued support to the UP College of Education’s Master in Population Studies.

1978 : The entire faculty and senior staff were resource persons for the special commission to review the Philippine Population Program created by the President under the Letter of Instruction 661.

1980 : Joint analysis of the 1978 Republic of the Philippines Fertility Survey with colleagues from NSO, POPCOM, and the UP School of Economics.

1981 : The first Professional Chair in Demography was established with funds from the Ford Foundation.

1982 : The UP Board of Regents approved the constitution of UPPI faculty and its MA Demography Program as a Department of Demography to be transferred to the Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).

1982 : The Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study project - the first nationwide study on youth sexuality .

1983 : UPPI was attached to the Division of Social Sciences, CAS, UP Diliman.

1983 : Establishment of the Demographic Research and Demographic Foundation (DRDF Inc.) aimed at supporting the Institute in accomplishing its objectives .

1984 : The University Council approved the Institute’s offering of Plan B(non-thesis) program of MA Demography.

1985 : The Institute leadership was changed from Dean to a Director that was brought about by its attachment to CSSP.

1985 : UP, on behalf of the Institute, entered into a contract with POPCOM for the execution of the preparatory phase of the 1986 Contraceptive Prevalence Survey(CPS).

1985 : UPPI was a recipient of two slots of the University’s Faculty Development Funds: 1. Diamond Jubilee Professional Chair 2. Faculty Research Grant.

1985 : Physical transfer from Rizal Hall, P. Faura, Manila to Palma Hall, Diliman (September 1985).

1987 : The Philippine Population Association (PPA) was established by a group of demographers as the first association of population enthusiasts; it has since been housed at the UPPI.

1989 : UPPI was a recipient of a sizeable 5-year institutional development grant from the UNDF which included additional staff, equipment, fellowships, trainings, enhancement of library, improvement of physical space and vehicle.

1989 : The Family Planning Operations Research (FP-OR) project funded by the UNFPA was implemented by UPPI with relevant agencies and program implementers intended to improve various components of the Philippine Family Planning Program.

1990 : Population Data Archive was established after training on the technology from Sociometrics USA. The project organized important data sets of the NSO and UPPI and provided documentations for students and researchers access.

1997 : UPPI started implementing the 3-year Comprehensive Research Program on Population and Development (CRP-POPDEV). The 11 researches represent new efforts in understanding the population, development and environment nexus.

1999 : The UP Board of Regents approved the Master in Population Studies (MPOPS) program.

2000 : initial offering of Master in Population Studies (MPOPS).

2001 : UPPI website was inaugurated (http://popinst.upd.edu.ph).

The 6th Country Programme (CP) of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), together with the National Economic and Development Authority, identified ten pilot provinces (Ifugao, Mt. Province, Masbate, Bohol, Eastern Samar, Sultan Kudarat, Sulu, Tawi‐Tawi, Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao) and one city (Olongapo City) for the implementation of the Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP).

This study examines the lifestyles and health of young workers in call centers and how they compare with young workers in other industries. In particular, it looks at how their work and lifestyles affect their economic, social and health (including their reproductive health) situation.
