The Philippines is an archipelago located in Southeast Asia. Consisting of some 7,107 islands, it covers a total land area of 300,000 square kilometers. It is bounded by the China Sea in its western and northern sides, the Celebes Sea in the south, and the Pacific Ocean in the east.

There are three major island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The country is divided into 17 administrative regions, 78 provinces, 115 cities, 1,496 municipalities, and 41,939 barangays or villages.
 

More than half of the population reside in Luzon and the rest is split equally between the Visayan Islands and Mindanao. Nearly 12 million people or about 16 percent of the total population reside in Metro Manila, the capital region.

Christianity is the predominant religion with around 83% of the people are Roman Catholics.
