UPPI and DRDF participate in the 2010 Philippine Population Association Annual Scientific Conference
The sixth annual scientific conference of the Philippine Population Association (PPA) was held at the Heritage Hotel on 4-5 February 2010. About 140 participants from the academe (including representatives from 12 local and international universities), government (such as the Commission on Population and National Statistics Office), non-government organizations (such as Health Action Information Network, Philippine Legislators Committee on Population and Development, and Coalition of Services of the Elderly), and the media, attended the conference.
The conference featured two plenary sessions. The first was in honor of Fr. Wilhelm Flieger, SVD, one of the pioneers in the field of demography in the Philippines. Presenters included Dr. Linda Adair of University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill, Dr. Josefina Cabigon of UPPI, and Dr. Socorro Gultiano of USC-OPS. The second focused on the 2010 Census of Population and Housing, with Administrator Carmelita Ericta of the National Statistics Office as main presenter.
Nine parallel sessions were held over two days, covering the following topics: Gender and Sexuality, Historical Demography, Health and Lifestyle of the Filipino Older People, Reproductive Health Issues, Health and Family Planning among Population Subgroups, Aging in the Philippines, Contemporary Marriage Forms, ICT and the Filipino Youth, and Health and Demography.
This year’s conference was organized by a team of PPA members from the UP Population Institute (UPPI) and the Demographic Research and Development Foundation (DRDF). The conference committee was chaired by Dr. M. Midea M. Kabamalan, who is Assistant Professor at the UPPI, Executive Director of DRDF, and Treasurer of the PPA, and co-chaired by Dr. Nanette Lee, Senior Research Associate at the University of San Carlos Office of Population Studies Foundation (USC-OPS). Faculty, staff and students of UPPI, as well DRDF researchers, participated in various sessions as paper presenters, poster presenters, chairs, discussants, and volunteers.
UPPI and DRDF also helped organize the PPA pre-conference workshop on 4 February 2010 at the UPPI Conference Room. The workshop covered technical writing and presentation of research results. Representatives from government, the academe, and NGOs participated in the whole-day workshop.
