PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The 2002 Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFS3) is a national survey of 19,728 young adults ages 15-27.  It is the third in a series of cross-sectional surveys on Filipino youth conducted by the Demographic Research and Development Foundation and the University of the Philippines Population Institute, with funding support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

YAFS3 was undertaken primarily to update the national and regional databases on the nature and magnitude of sexuality and reproductive health (RH) knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of adolescents and young adults in the country.   Moreover, the project aims to establish trends in important reproductive health events based on levels found in previous YAFS surveys.   Information from YAFS3 has been used in various policies and programs to protect the health and welfare of the Filipino youth. 

YAFS3 builds on the data from its two predecessor surveys (conducted in 1982 and 1994) by covering both sexual and non-sexual risk behaviors.  Sexuality, fertility and reproductive health are its main focus.  Respondents were asked questions on their knowledge, attitudes and behavior on puberty, dating, sex, cohabitation and marriage, contraception, reproductive health problems and sexually-transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS.  Attitudes and perceptions on divorce, gender identity and orientation, and abortion were also included.  Non-sexual risk behaviors such as smoking, drinking alcohol, substance use, violence, depression, suicide and school suspension, were likewise covered.  The adolescents’ background characteristics, mass media use, self-esteem and values, and information about their family, school, work, community, and peers were also gathered by YAFS3.
